Harrow Council is urging
the Uganda Resettlement Board to "re-route" Uganda Asian refugees
to places other than Harrow where possible.
A statement issued by the council says that on present trends, it is estimated
that in the region of 1,500 Uganda Asians will eventually settle in the
borough.
A meeting of Harrow Council's Special Committee re Uganda Asians on October
25 expressed concern at the overloading of council services and the general
lack of information on financial aid to be made available for resettlement.
In a letter to the Resettlement Board, the council's Chief Executive and
Town Clerk, Mr Stanley Lancaster, pointed out that the committee felt
that the Board should be made aware of its acute concern not only as to
the diffuculties occasioned by the overloading of the council's services,
but also to the problems which are envisaged in regard to the resettlement
and harmony of the Asians within the community if the influx continues
at the present rate.
