A request to the Home Secretary to tighten up existing
immigration controls on people who had not yet applied to come to the
United Kingdom was made during QuestionTime in the House of Commons last
week by Mr Hugh Dykes, MP for Harrow East.
Mr Dykes suggested to Mr Roy Jenkins that one of his best acts before
going to the presidency of the European Commission would be to provide
reassurance of an improvement in " genuinely good" race relations
on new entrants.
In reply, Mr Jenkins said he had stated firmly and clearly that effective
control of immigration was essential to good race relations
