A request to the Home Secretary to tighten up existing immigration controls on people who had not yet applied to come to the United Kingdom was made during QuestionTime in the House of Commons last week by Mr Hugh Dykes, MP for Harrow East.
Mr Dykes suggested to Mr Roy Jenkins that one of his best acts before going to the presidency of the European Commission would be to provide reassurance of an improvement in " genuinely good" race relations on new entrants.
In reply, Mr Jenkins said he had stated firmly and clearly that effective control of immigration was essential to good race relations
