Continued help and support are needed by the Ugandan Asian refugees so that they can re-establish their lives in this country.
That is one of the principal messages contained on a 60-page report just produced by the Community Relations Commission.
The Commission stresses: "This is not an optimistic report. The extent to which is shows that the Ugandan refugees require continued help and support to aid their resettlement is a comment on our society, and draws attention to ways in which the structures of the welfare state are insufficiently flexible - not only to meet the specific needs of the Ugandan Asians but also to provide effective opportunities for the participation of other minority groups."
The report gives the estimated number of Uganda Asians in Harrow as 1,500, and in Brent as over 3,000. The first figure was obtained as a result of a questionnaire and the second through interviews with the Community Relations Officers.
